This Thing Called Love

This Thing Called Love Wednesday.jpg

When God created man and woman, He gave us romantic (Eros) love. This bond between two people has inspired great literature and torn nations apart. It is almost like a chemical reaction with an unknown formula. My new poem, "This Thing Called Love," is written to portray the complexity of love as it also has its shadow side. I have known this spectrum in my own life as I've experienced deep love along with deep hurt and heartbreak. Despite the risk of hurt and pain, it is always worth continuing to give and receive love. Loving is a core need and part of our humanity. God created us to love. We love because God first loved us. It connects us to the source of all love, as He is the wellspring of love. God is love.

This Thing Called Love

What is this thing called love?
God only knows from Heaven above
It can't be explained
It can drive us insane

It is impossible to withhold
Our character it can change and mold
As much as we try to deny
It breaks hearts, makes us cry

How many have fallen to sin?
The cause was love in the end
Passion, desire, wants, and lust
It can lead to breaking all trust

Shattered hearts can leave lives broken
When we are not the one who was chosen
When two hearts become tightly bound
This is the solace longing to be found

Why does love have such control?
For it, souls to the Devil have been sold
We risk all knowing the cost
We wager not caring what's lost

Once it's given there is no return
Something our hearts never seem to learn
It can make us weak or strong
We can't let go; it keeps us hanging on

Does it ever leave its hold?
What remains can find lost hearts cold
It can fill us with sadness and depression
It can drive us crazed with obsession

Hurt and loss, happiness and bliss
This is what we always risk
But love is what matters in the end
Broken hearts can always mend

Are we just pawns being played?
Our future fate may be cast and laid
Just for a stolen, stealth, tender kiss
Knowing this touch and feeling will be missed

Melded hearts of true soulmates
Remind us love is never too late
Frail humans are what we are
It is love that will last carrying us far

What is this thing called love?
God only knows from Heaven above
It is about sacrifice, patience, and forgiving
It is what keeps us breathing and living

Love is what connects us to God and each other
It is also about loving all, as sisters and brothers
Given as a divine gift to be our energy and life force
From God, the eternal wellspring of love; its original source

"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."
John 15:12

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
1 Cor 13:4-8a

"And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them."
1 John 4:16

"We love because he first loved us."
1 John 4:19
